About Nick Haney
Councilmember Nick Haney was elected to represent District One in August 2022 and began his four-year term in January 2023. In January 2024, his colleagues selected him to serve as the youngest Vice Mayor in city history, a recognition of his leadership, work ethic, and commitment to the community. Born and raised in Surprise, Nick is a proud product of the Dysart Unified School District.
His family moved to Surprise more than twenty years ago because it was a place where young families could thrive. That sense of community shaped Nick early on and inspired his lifelong commitment to public service. Haney got his first chance to serve Surprise as the chairman of the Surprise Youth Commission.
On City Council, Nick serves on the Boards and Commissions Nominations Committee, the Tourism Fund Subcommittee, and the Community Outreach, Partnerships, and Grants Committee. He also represents Surprise on the Maricopa Association of Governments Transportation Policy Committee, helping guide regional transportation planning and long-term infrastructure investment across the Valley.
Nick earned his bachelor’s degree from Arizona State University, where he emerged as a campus leader and graduated Summa Cum Laude. After college, he chose to continue his family’s tradition of service by becoming a first responder.
Public service runs deep in the Haney family. Two of Nick’s grandparents served in the United States Air Force. His grandfather, who still lives in Surprise, served as a Navy Corpsman during the Vietnam War. His father is a United States Army veteran, and his mother serves in law enforcement. Nick has carried that legacy forward as a Fire Captain and Paramedic with one of the busiest fire departments in the Valley. Outside of work, he regularly volunteers at charitable events throughout the community.
Nick is married to his wife, Nicole, a Pediatric Intensive Care Unit nurse at Phoenix Children’s Hospital who recently earned her doctorate to become a Pediatric Nurse Practitioner. In February 2024, they welcomed their daughter, Amelia, and are proud to be raising their family in the same city that raised them.
